G.I. Joe: Retaliation | Review

You can’t go into this movie thinking it’ll be anything other than stupid fun. If it’s done right, this film based in toys can be so dumb it’s entertaining. And that’s exactly what it is. Most of the heroes from the first film are gone, with only Channing Tatum returning (Though in a supporting role). The Rock, Adrianne Palicki, and D.J. Cotrona are the newleading Joes. The film packs more humor than before, which is smart because this film probably wouldn’t have worked without knowing how silly it is. The characters are still one-dimensional but it’s nice to see some backstory given to some of the major players. The star of this film, however, is the action. The action sequences are thrilling and top-knotch. The Eastern-inspired fights are definitely more entertaining than the Western. Martial arts is just more entertaining than gunfire, guys. The mountaintop fight between Snake Eyes and red ninjas is the highlight. It’s a 9-minute dialogue-less sequence that never stops wowing you. The antagonists, Cobra, and their plan are convoluted throughout the film but in the third act they become clear and it’s actually kind of clever. Also Bruce Willis makes a nice cameo as a plain badass, as always. This is not a great film, but it IS fun.

Three out of four Kent's.
