Being the first Marvel film post-Avengers, Phase 2 is off to a great start with this third (and possibly final) installment to the Iron Man franchise. Tony Stark now suffers from PTSD after the events in New York, and has been suit crazy (building 42 total). Not only does he have to deal with anxiety attacks, but now he must face a mysterious foe in the form of The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), a Bin Laden-like terrorist bent on taking away everything Stark holds near and dear. Also in the mix is Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), a scientist Stark ignored 13 years prior and who now seeks revenge.

One problem the Marvel films have always lacked is interesting villains (Loki is an exception). Kingsley’s portrayal of The Mandarin is scene-stealing and will be remembered for years. The filmmaker’s take on the character won’t be loved by everyone, especially hardcore comic book faithfuls. But I really liked the decision they made with the character and thought it was brilliant.

Pearce’s character is an admirable intellectual foe to Stark, but his master plan is pretty muddled.

The film depicts Stark at his lowest point and shows him without his suit for much of the film. It’s much more interesting seeing the man under the suit.

The action here is better than the previous two films, especially a sequence involving Air Force One in which Stark has to save 13 airborne citizens but can only save 4.

Director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) brings the fun and life back into the series after the disappointing Iron Man 2. There are many jokes throughout to balance out the action and drama.
