The Internship | Review

I honestly had really low expectations for this new comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The trailers poorly sold this film as a generic buddy movie with two comedy vets and showcased really weak jokes. So, it makes me happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this nice surprise of a film because it totally blew away any negative expectations I had of it.

The fact that the trailers didn’t show any of the “good” parts of The Internship is both its strength and weakness. It’s good because the strong parts are fresh, but it’s bad because the bad marketing hurts the film’s chances of actually being seen in such a busy summer environment. Oh well, may the odds be ever in its favor. I’m just happy to have seen this fun and enjoyable movie.

Vaughn and Wilson are best friends and salesmen who both lose their jobs, thus leading them to an internship at Google. The entire film shows the trials and errors of these two as they go through various challenges as part of the internship. Along the way, the two bond with a group of misfits who were forced to be on a team together. The premise is simple and predictable, but it’s really the chemistry between the two leads and their fellow supporting actors that make the film enjoyable. Vaughn and Wilson have great chemistry and it’s a joy to see interplay between the two; they just work so well together. The younger supporting actors, Dylan O’Brien, Tobit Raphael, and Tiya Sircar are great and it’s fun to see their characters interact and slowly grow.

I loved seeing the fun challenges presented throughout the internship; it was just pure fun to see the characters simply have fun. Also, the film does add a romance portion between Wilson and Rose Byrne’s character, but the film wisely doesn’t focus TOO much time on it. That would’ve just slowed down the film’s pace, which, I must say, feels pretty brisk for a 2-hour film.

Sure, at times the film does feel like a big advertisement for Google (though, I do love Google), but for the most part I ignored this issue because the actors are just way too charming. This is not exactly a great comedy, but I had fun watching this film – that’s the biggest point I want to make.

Three out of four Kent's.
