This Is the End | Review
Honestly, this could’ve been a massive failure. A bunch of famous comedians playing themselves while the world is ending is a wild premise, but thanks to the amazing chemistry between the cast, it works.
As crazy apocalyptic shit starts to happen, six actor friends lock themselves within James Franco’s new home to prevent “whatever’s out there” from getting to them. Including Franco, the friends are Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson.
I thought keeping these men inside the house throughout the majority of the film would be a mistake, but the self containment actually leads to bigger laughs. All of the actors are together most of the time as they try to survive with low food and water, while at the same time trying to tolerate each other.
It’s funny seeing these guys play one-note, heightened versions of themselves. Some can’t stand each other and they constantly rib on one another.
Unlike the gross humor of many other comedies, like say The Hangover, this film is full of self-deprecating jokes. These jokes are actually laugh out loud funny, and don’t rely on grossness or outrageousness.
I really loved how ridiculous the film is and how much fun the cast seems to have. The laughs never stop, the cameos are great, and most importantly it’s enjoyable. Plus, Emma Watson is in the movie!
