I thought this movie was supposed to be about the answer to the universe but it’s really about some guy named Jackie Robinson. Lol, jk. This is a film about the legendary American baseball player and his struggles to break the racial barriers of major league baseball. It’s a competently made film from writer-director Brian Helgeland, with a good performance from the relatively unknown Chadwick Boseman, who portrays Jackie. The film set out to be an inspirational sports movie involving racism, and that’s exactly what it accomplishes. We see the harassment and name-calling Jackie had to deal with. We feel his pain. There are some strikingly powerful scenes. But this is no more than a good film, not great. It doesn’t delve deep into the characters and the complexity of racism.

Three out of four Kent's.
