Everything I Watched in 2020
Years ago I tried documenting every television series and film on a Google spreadsheet but (typical me) I never kept it going. I tried again in 2020 and, thankfully, I finished.
While organizing the list onto this blog post, it was interesting to revisit what I watched all last year because sometimes it told me what was going on in the world, or in my life, at that moment in time. For example, in June, at the height of the summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, I dedicated my time to Black stories (Detroit, Selma, 13th, Dear White People, Watchmen, Random Acts of Flyness); the unexplained month-long gap between mid-July and mid-August in which I didn’t watch anything (basically, work was super busy during that period); and my revisiting Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame late August/early September after Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death.
With so many films delayed to 2021 due to the pandemic, I ended up watching more documentaries last year than I’d ever watched in a single year prior (Hillary, All In: The Fight for Democracy, 537 Votes, A Secret Love, American Murder: The Family Next Door, Totally Under Control, The Reagans, everything Taylor Swift). Documentaries are great, I’m just lazy and usually prefer typical film narratives as opposed to fact-based documentaries. The same goes for foreign-language films—I don’t usually go out of my way to watch them because, again, I’m too lazy to read subtitles, but some of the best films I’d seen last year were foreign-language (including Goodbye Mother, A Sun, and the most controversial film of the year, Cuties).
I also revisited some of my favorite shows, including Community, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Legend of Korra. And I caught up and/or finished ones I’d been putting off, like Bojack Horseman, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, New Girl, Terrace House, Veep, Grace and Frankie, Superstore, and Grown-ish.
