FOUR KENTS

The Host | Review

It starts off feeling more mature and engaging than Stephanie Meyer’s ‘Twilight’ series, which gave me hope, but it soon devolves into an unintentionally funny sappy romance.Aliens called “Souls” have taken over almost every human body, but some are still in hiding. The Souls only want peace, and have actually benefitted the earth more than humans, which makes it hard to root against the aliens sometimes. Saoirse Ronan is great at portraying the lead Melanie, who has been taken over by a Soul, but whose mind is still fighting against the invader. Thus, she has two personalities throughout the film. It’s an interesting hook, but it quickly becomes more silly and funny than serious. Lines like “kiss me” and “sleep with me” initiates laughter. We become more annoyed with Melanie and root for the Soul. Ronan and the actors playing her uncle and little brother are the only passable performances. The rest have wooden performances and unfortunately have laughable lines. At least the film looks nice.

Two out of four Kent's.
